Swiss diplomat found dead in Tehran

In the Iranian capital, Tehran, a diplomat from the Swiss embassy was found dead in its apartment complex. A spokesman for the Iranian emergency services told the “ISNA” news agency, that the woman fell from the seventeenth floor of an apartment building north of the city, Monday evening.

The housekeeper did not find her body in the compound’s garden until Tuesday. The authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the woman’s death.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bern, Switzerland, has now confirmed that a Swiss employee at the embassy in Tehran had a fatal accident. Foreign Minister Ignacio Cassis expressed his condolences to the family. The ministry is in contact with the closest relatives and was unable to provide further details.

According to informed sources, the victim was a 51-year-old diplomat who worked in the service representing US diplomatic interests in Iran. Since it severed diplomatic relations between Iran and the United States more than 40 years ago, Switzerland has been pursuing Washington’s interests in Tehran.
