The large crowds on the motorways at the start of the long Easter holidays are over

After a particularly quiet morning rush hour, the traffic jam meter shifted completely in the opposite direction from morning onwards. The Antwerp loop and access roads also turned red, but at 5pm the traffic jams seem to be past their prime. Currently, there are almost no traffic jams on our roads.

146 kilometers, this is how long traffic jams on Flemish roads are added around 17:00. Antwerp certainly did not escape misery. But after an hour, the traffic jams have already more than halved and it’s about seven o’clock in the evening to look for the traffic jams on the traffic map with a magnifying glass.

“I wrote in the stars,” says Peter Bruyninks, a spokesman for the Flemish Traffic Center, about the busy evening rush hour, which seemed to peak in the afternoon. “The morning rush hour on Friday morning is usually the quietest of the work week, on the other hand, the Friday evening rush hour is the busiest. This is no different now,” says Bruyninckx.

At 8.30 in the morning there was only 20 kilometers of heavy traffic on all of the Flemish motorways. But starting at 10:30 am, the traffic jam meter went way above normal. The already busy typical rush hour on a Friday evening has been exacerbated by the extended Easter weekend which is just around the corner and many people leaving at the weekends.

Bruyninckx predicts a similar scenario for the upcoming boarding weekend in May.
