The Portuguese Parliament legalizes euthanasia | abroad

The Portuguese Parliament passed a law permitting “death with medical assistance”. Thus Catholic Portugal could become the fourth country in Europe to legalize euthanasia.

The text was approved by 136 votes to 78. Four members also abstained. The bill will now be presented to Conservative Party Chairman Marcelo Rebelo de Souza. He now has a choice between implementing it and either submitting it to the Constitutional Court for analysis or objection to it.

The bill was passed thanks to majority votes for the Socialist Party PS, the left-wing bloc (far left), the animal rights party PAN and some members of parliament from the center-right party PSD.

Many of the scripts were already approved by a majority of representatives in February of last year. Specifically, only adult Portuguese can use euthanasia. To do this, they must be in a state of severe suffering or terminal illness.
