Today is animal day. For many people, this is the time to spoil their pets. But besides the fact that it’s nice to lie next to you on the couch, owning a pet has even more advantages.
Think carefully about purchasing a pet
So, never take a pet into your home, Uber says. “If you don’t do it consciously and don’t know what to expect, the animal may be disappointed as well.”
Endenburg also stresses that it’s a good idea to think carefully in advance whether you can give the animal what it needs. “A pet costs time and money. And I’m not talking about the purchase, because that’s a one-time thing. The real costs only come after that, when it comes to food and care.”
She recommends that you research the type of animal you are purchasing. For example, with dogs, you can check which breed best suits your personality.
Rabbits prefer not to sit on your lap
Uber believes that rabbits and guinea pigs are often bought as cuddly toys for children, when in fact they are not suitable for that at all. “These animals do not like to sit on your lap at all and are not as easy to care for as people sometimes think.”
A rabbit can also live up to ten years. “They should be taken care of throughout their lives. How long will children continue to enjoy this? Adults are ultimately responsible and therefore they should also be willing to take care of such an animal.”
If you have thought about it carefully and finally got a cute dog in your home, both experts do not recommend letting the animal sleep in the bed. “Sniffer dogs get their faces in everything.”
“If you have good resistance, this in itself should not be a problem,” Endenburg says. “As long as the animal is checked regularly by the vet for fleas, ticks and worms.”
It is best not to take your dog or cat with you to sleep
If you’re less resistant, have something going on, or are otherwise vulnerable, it’s best to leave it alone, Endenburg believes. Uber says the dog comes into the street with its claws everywhere. “At the end of the day, don’t lie in bed with your shoes on.”
Endenburg does not recommend washing paws every day. “This is not good for the dog, because it removes all kinds of skin sebum.” In addition, a dog can also scratch with its claws while it sleeps, Uber knows.
“But you can also turn around and accidentally lay on your dog’s leg, head, or ear, causing your dog to be in pain, startle, and possibly bite due to reflex. So I don’t recommend putting your dog to bed.”
Uber says the same applies to cats. “They also touch everything with their mouths. They may bathe a lot, but they do it with the same tongue they use to eat things. If they scratch you, you can get cat scratch disease,” she warns. “It could make you very sick. So it’s also best not to let cats sleep in the beds.”
