The United Kingdom officially left the European Union on January 31, 2020, after a 2016 referendum in which a majority voted to leave. But the quarrels between supporters and opponents never stopped. Now more and more Britons seem to regret their choice to leave Europe.

According to a poll conducted by the British newspaper “The Independent”, it appears that more than 65 percent of Britons believe that a new referendum should be held. A year ago it was only 55 percent. 22 percent of them want to vote as soon as possible, 24 percent want a referendum in five years and 11 percent are considering six to ten years.

Only 4 percent think a new vote should take place in more than 20 years, while the number of people who think a second referendum should not take place has fallen from 32 percent to 24 percent.

“bad decision”

According to Chris Hopkins, director of the Savanta Polling Center, the findings suggest that “Brexiters” overestimated the potential benefits of Brexit. One of the main arguments within the “leave” camp was to “take back control of the borders”. But three years later, not much of that promise has come of it.

The poll also showed that 54 per cent say Brexit was a bad decision, up from 46 per cent last year. In addition, 56 percent believe that leaving has worsened the country’s economic situation. Half of them believe that the UK’s global image and influence in the world has been damaged by Brexit.

“It’s hard to imagine that EU membership will solve the country’s current economic problems, but perceptions matter,” Hopkins adds.
