UK closes border to oak crawler caterpillar | Enschede and surroundings

VideoThe UK will soon ban the import of large oak trees from all EU countries to prevent the advance of oak caterpillars. This was reported by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). This ban applies throughout the United Kingdom.

The NVWA has reported that the UK has found these pesky caterpillars in trees supplied by the Netherlands in the past year. The wood comes from at least 7 different companies spread across the Netherlands. “The UK wants trees with these caterpillars to get in, so has tightened the requirements,” NVWA said.

The ban applies to all trees of the genus Quercus, except for Quercus saper with a girth of more than 8 centimeters at a height of 1.2 meters. The exact start date is still unknown at this time. Small oak trees are still allowed in the country.

MVWA urges Dutch growers to inspect trees more carefully for the presence of caterpillars. “NVWA urgently advises growers and traders to exercise extreme caution immediately when exporting large oaks to the United Kingdom and Ireland; ZP requirements also apply to Ireland. The first moths are expected to fly and lay eggs within days.”

The oak crawler caterpillar is only found in limited numbers in the United Kingdom and there is a desire to prevent new introductions.
