Democratic Unionist Party leader Geoffrey Donaldson told the British House of Commons today that it was ‘unacceptable’ for Northern Ireland to pass European laws without any prior mutual consent.

He asked Sunak if the British prime minister could assure him that these constitutional problems would be resolved “not just by tweaking the Brexit protocol,” Donaldson said. “But by rewriting the entire binding agreement.”

‘Loud and clear’

Sunak said he understood the question “loud and clear” and asked policymakers about the possibilities surrounding the constitutional and legal framework in place in Northern Ireland. He wants to change that. “This is an essential part of the negotiations with the EU,” Sunak said, declining to discuss details.

That Sunak faces a challenge can be called an understatement. Government representatives from both the United Kingdom and the European Union have indicated that the existing Brexit deal will not be amended in any way if a deal is reached. Instead, it makes more sense for the UK and the EU to amend their own laws to implement the new Northern Ireland Protocol.
