US court orders Texas to dismantle controversial floating border barrier | outside

A US federal court on Wednesday ordered the state of Texas to dismantle a floating border barrier on the Rio Grande River. Governor Greg Abbott ordered the barrier raised to stem the illegal influx of immigrants from Mexico.

The court in Austin, the capital of Texas, agreed with the arguments of the Democratic federal government in Washington, which requested that construction of the barrier be suspended. Republican Governor Abbott immediately announced that he would appeal the ruling.

The court ordered Texas authorities to move all sections of the barrier by September 15 and not to build any new bombs on the Rio Grande River pending a decision on the merits by a higher court.

The reason for the judge’s decision was “the damage caused by the floating barrier”, such as tensions in relations with Mexico, obstruction of free shipping and threats to public safety.

The barrier, which is 300 meters long, consists of large buoys tied together with nets that reach the bottom of the river. Barbed wire has been placed on the beach. In early August, a lifeless body was found trapped in the floating barrier.

The Department of Justice in Washington has confirmed that the shackles are not only a humanitarian problem, but also a diplomatic problem, because it violates the border treaties signed with Mexico.
