VUB Andrew Jones Honorary Doctorate Invitation – Flemish Athletics League

The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 20 at 5 p.m At Huis van het Hout, Waversesteenweg 950, near the main VUB campus. The short ceremony will be followed by a lecture on the “two-hour sub-marathon” by the new honorary doctor. This will be followed by a reception.

Andrew (Andy) Jones is Professor of Applied Physiology at the University of Exeter, UK. He is sometimes referred to as “Andy Beetroot” because he was the first to show that beetroot juice positively affects submaximal performance during exercise.

Jones is recognized internationally as a leading researcher on, among others, the causes of exercise intolerance in healthy subjects and persons with disabilities, the kinetics of respiratory oxygen exchange during exercise, and the physiology and nutrition, especially during endurance exercise. He is the recipient of many scientific awards and has extensive experience training top athletes, including Paula Radcliffe.

Most recently, Professor Jones was involved with Project Breaking2 where he led Eliud Kipchoge to run a marathon in under two hours.
