Keep windows and doors tightly closed now that the weather is colder (and wetter): According to experts, it’s better not to. Because it may be nice and warm, but it is less good for your health.
More and more people are developing asthma and allergies
If the air quality in your home is inadequate, moisture, mold, and particulate matter problems can be harmful to your health. “It increases the risk of respiratory complaints,” says Karoly Ili, director of Longfonds. “And if you have a lung disease, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, you may be more likely to suffer from shortness of breath and other health problems.”
This was also stated in a report by RIVM. According to the institute, humidity and mold in the home are not necessarily causes of health problems. However, they can aggravate complaints such as sore throat, sneezing, cough, nasal congestion, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
According to the Lung Fund, people with low resistance are also more susceptible to infection. “The number of people developing asthma and allergies is increasing, and as a result the number of people who are sensitive to moisture-related conditions is also increasing.”
Continue cleaning regularly
How can you actually measure the air quality in your home? Hompe recommends purchasing a carbon dioxide meter. “With high CO2 values, you don’t get enough fresh air. So it’s important to open your windows, even in winter.”
Regular cleaning and removal of dirty materials also helps. At Lungfonds they recommend removing dust and drying everything well after cleaning.
According to Homby, there is little communication about the importance of healthy indoor air. “When it comes to healthy living, it’s mainly about healthy eating, more exercise and good sleep. Whereas: The cleaner the air, the more fit and energetic you’ll feel.”
