Borrell calls on EU member states to patrol the Taiwan Strait | outside

Borrell wrote in an opinion piece in the French newspaper “Journal du Dimanche” that Europe should be “very present on this issue that concerns us economically, commercially and technically.” “I therefore appeal to European marines to patrol the Taiwan Strait to show Europe’s commitment to freedom of navigation in this very vital area.”

Borrell had earlier hinted that the Taiwan Strait is “the most strategic strait in the world in terms of trade”. Borrell wrote in an editorial: “Taiwan is part of our strategic surroundings to ensure peace and defend our interests.”

The call came from the European foreign representative after the controversial statements of French President Emmanuel Macron. He recently said that “the worst thing is to think that we Europeans should take the lead in the Taiwan issue, adapting to the American rhythm and the Chinese overreaction.”

China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since 1949, but Beijing considers the democratic island part of its territory. Tensions in the region have risen sharply in recent months, including after diplomatic meetings between the United States and Taiwan.
