The Prime Minister of Cote d’Ivoire dies in a hospital in Germany | Abroad

The Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of Ivory Coast, Hamid Bakayoko, died of cancer in a German hospital today. This was announced by President Alassane Ouattara. Bakayoko was 56 years old.




“It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Prime Minister Hamid Bakayoko, Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, after a battle against cancer,” Ouattara said on Twitter. Among other things, Bakayoko is called “a great statesman” and “a model for our youth”, and honors his “great generosity and exemplary loyalty.”

Bakayoko was transferred for the first time to France on February 18 due to health problems. After his condition deteriorated, he was later transferred to a hospital in Germany in early March.

Bakayoko has been the head of government in Ivory Coast since July 2020. He succeeded Amadou John Coulibaly, who died a few days after his return from France, where he was admitted due to heart problems.
Patrick Achi, Secretary General of the Presidency of Ivory Coast, was appointed interim Prime Minister in early March. Tine Brahima Ouattara has been appointed Minister of Presidential Affairs and brother of President Alassane Ouattara as Acting Minister of Defense.
