US diplomatic mission to Afghanistan moves to Qatar | Abroad

The United States moves its diplomatic mission to Afghanistan from Kabul to Doha, Qatar. This was announced by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. In a letter afterward, Blinken explained that the military mission was now over, but that a “new diplomatic mission” had begun. On Monday evening, Pennington announced that the US military had completely left Afghanistan.




Blinken explained the next steps after the military withdrawal. First of all, a new team will be assembled for the new diplomatic mission. According to the minister, the Americans will continue to work to assist the Afghan citizens and the deserving who wish to leave. Blinken emphasized that even if the Americans or the Afghans later decided they wanted to leave Afghanistan, they would be helped. It is said that between 100 and 200 Americans are still in the country and want to leave.

Earlier today, the US ambassador to Afghanistan took off the last plane from the country, “suspending” the US diplomatic presence in Kabul. Activities will be transferred to Qatar. From there, contacts will be made with the Taliban, among other things.

Regarding the Taliban, Blinken said the Americans will be judged based on what the new rulers of Afghanistan do to honor their commitments. The Taliban said they would have to win the legitimacy and support they wanted.

The Secretary also announced that the United States will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people. This will not be done through the Afghan government, but through independent UN agencies and NGOs.
