Most of the residents of European cities have been in favor of stopping the use of combustion engine cars since the end of this decade. This is shown in a study by Yukov and Think Tank Transport & Environment (D&E) based on a survey of 10,050 respondents in 15 European cities.
This measure is generally considered to be a good tool for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Deadline
The researchers found that 63 percent of respondents would support the idea of allowing only zero-emission cars to be sold in Europe from the next decade. On the other hand, 29 percent opposed the idea of stopping sales of petrol or diesel cars. The remaining 8 percent have no opinion on the matter.
In all cities, the majority of respondents were in favor of the strike. The highest score was recorded in Rome, where 77 percent of those surveyed want to see sales of combustion engine cars come to an end. At the other end of the spectrum were Antwerp and Berlin with 51 percent marks.
Transport and the Environment (D&E) is urging the European Commission to present a definitive deadline for the sale of cars with combustion engines in June and to include it in its plans for climate policy.
“In cities, the population is most affected by toxic air pollution,” argues Julia Baliskanova, director of transportation and the environment vehicle. “These people don’t want cars with combustion engines being sold for longer than necessary.”
The European Commission is proposing stricter emission limits for cars this year, while legislation is underway to expand the infrastructure for charging electric cars.
