Firefox no longer gets updates on older Windows versions

Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 will no longer receive new versions of Firefox starting next month. Security updates will continue for another year.

Firefox 115 will be the last new version of the browser for Windows users who are sticking to Windows 7, 8 or 8.1. Mozilla announces it. Although those older versions of Windows are no longer supported by Microsoft, they are still in use. This was only revealed in a survey among our readers. Support for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome ended earlier.

Important updates

Following the release of version 115, Mozilla will continue to provide critical security updates through the Firefox Extended Support Release (ESR) channel. Serious leaks are thus closed until September 2024. From then on, updates will stop completely.

Those who use Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 today are exposing themselves to unnecessary risks. Without security updates, operating systems are vulnerable to hackers and malware. For Firefox, continuing to support an obsolete operating system is time consuming and expensive. The end of the updates did not come as a surprise.

It’s time to upgrade

Does this news interest you? Then maybe consider switching to a new version of Windows as soon as possible, or to a different operating system if necessary. Windows 10 is still available and does not have the same stringent system requirements as Windows 11. Your favorite browser and other software will work safely on this operating system for some time to come.
