Monkey pox vaccine producer unable to meet demand | Monkey – Science

Bavaria Nordic, the Danish company that made the world’s approved monkey flu vaccine, fears it will not be able to meet demand as the number of cases continues to rise everywhere. American news channel ‘Bloomberg’ reported. The company says it is now looking at whether it can outsource part of the production.

“Demand continues to grow, and even if we upgrade our existing product base in Denmark, it is not certain that we will be able to continue to meet it,” said VP Rolf Saas Sørensen.

This is the first time that Bavaria Nordic is considering outsourcing part of its JYNNEOS vaccine production. Earlier, the company said that transferring technology to third parties to increase productivity was “too complicated and expensive” and would take “too much time”.

Three months

Bavaria Nordic’s CEO has now told Danish newspaper ‘Borsen’ that such a transfer would normally take nine months, but could be shortened to three months.

“We are looking at how we can get help from partners in all steps of the production process,” says Rolf Sass Sørensen at ‘Bloomberg’. “We are also looking at a technology transfer to a manufacturer in the US to increase our capacity. No concrete talks have taken place, but we are exploring it and sketching the possibilities.

Monkeypox virus has now been identified in more than 70 countries. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak an international public health emergency. Earlier this week, the United Kingdom said it was struggling with a shortage of vaccines.

JYNNEOS was originally developed as a vaccine against common smallpox. Bavaria Nordic can currently produce 30 million doses a year at its factory north of Copenhagen.
