Germany wants to ban telecom companies from using certain Chinese components in its 5G mobile network, German daily Die Zeit reports. The action relates to geopolitical tensions with the Chinese.

According to the plans, certain components made by Chinese technology companies Huawei Technologies and ZTE will soon be banned from being used in telecom networks. Die Zeit relies on anonymous government sources. The German government said last month that it did not know how much Chinese equipment was being processed in its systems.

Washington has previously imposed restrictions on Chinese technology companies amid deteriorating relations between the world’s two largest economies. The United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union are increasingly focusing on the security risks from Chinese companies. The European Commission last month banned the use of TikTok on official phones after the US Congress already imposed restrictions on the use of the app on government devices last year.
