The first is located in Chipping Barnet, a suburb of north London Shared housing A community dedicated exclusively to women over 50, called New Ground. This is written Watchman. The women’s ages range from 58 to 94 years.
The purpose-built complex is managed entirely by women who created it as an alternative to living on their own. It took eighteen years before New Ground was allowed to officially open in 2016. Why did it take so long? “One problem was that we didn’t know what we were doing. No one, least of all me, had any experience of housing, construction or planning. An added complication was that the group wanted to build social housing as well. So they needed a housing association. After a long search, the Hanover Housing Association finally agreed to look for land to build on.
Shared housing
Cohousing, also known as central living, is an alternative form of housing where a community of residents share different homes and use shared facilities. The 25 apartments overlook a garden and share a common area. There the women hold dinners, movie nights and yoga classes.
